Why Some Don’t Consider Golf to be a Real Sport

When we talk about sport, first thing that comes into your mind are physically challenging activities such as boxing, basketball, badminton, swimming and tennis. You also think about strict rules and the characteristics of the players who have excelled in their chosen sports. You may also be familiar with golf, which is considered as a kind of sport at present but it is important to take note that not everybody looks at golf as such. Why? Here is a rundown of the reasons why some people do not consider golf as a real sport.

  • Golf isn’t at par with volleyball, football, baseball and other sports when it comes to the physical experience. You won’t get tired playing golf as compared to playing basketball or boxing, perhaps.
  • In golf, even teenagers could beat grown men in professional tournaments. In addition to this, professional golfers do not retire; they just become part of the senior circuit.
  • This is a “sport” that just rakes in billions of dollars. Golfers are usually not that awe-inspiring unlike basketball players, tennis players and swimmers who are idolized by the youth and adults as well because of their awesome skills.
  • Since anybody of any age and any skill level could play golf, it should not be considered as a sport. Also, participants do not run out of breath when playing it.
  • There is no shot clock when you play golf.
  • Golf is weather sensitive and cannot be played indoors unless you have a miniature golf course inside your house.
  • Fashion sense of golf players just does not make the mark—clad in green jackets and plaid pants, players just don’t look chic.
  • Terminologies in golf are prissy and somewhat painful to the ears with terms like putt, birdie, and bogey.
  • Golf players are not required to bring their own bag of clubs and they also use motorized carts with coolers and other amenities for their own comfort.
  • A few carts have GPS systems to indicate the exact distance of the golf ball to the hole, thus, offering an easy way to cheat the opponents.
  • In golf, there are very few things that you could consider as danger but the players get multi-million dollar fees.

In conclusion, golf can be considered as a skilled activity but not as a real sport. Maybe significant changes in the rules of the activity could transform it into something more worthy to be called as such.
